What To Pack

Embark on a Global Journey with Unrivaled Travel Specialists.

Traveling is such an exciting experience, but one thing I’ve learned over the years is the importance of having sturdy luggage. You never know how your bags will be handled on planes or ships, so investing in a good, durable set is a smart move. There are countless brands out there, but I recommend choosing something both sturdy and practical. A hard-shell suitcase is a fantastic option. Look for features like two sets of zippers for extra packing space and 360-degree spinning wheels—they make maneuvering through crowded airports a breeze. Also, make sure the handle extends comfortably to match your height; it can make all the difference.

When flying, always check the airline’s luggage dimensions for both checked bags and carry-ons. Typically, checked bags should be up to 62 linear inches and weigh around 50 lbs, though this can vary by carrier. Most airlines allow you one checked bag and one carry-on in the main cabin, but extra bags usually come with additional fees.

For carry-ons, the standard size is about 22 x 14 x 9 inches, so they fit safely in the overhead compartments. Personalizing your luggage with unique tags or stickers can help you spot your bags quickly on the carousel.

What to Pack in Your Carry-On:

Keep essential items with you in your carry-on bag. This includes medications, chargers for your devices, jewelry, and other valuables. I always pack a simple change of clothes in case there’s a delay with my checked luggage. If you’re traveling with medications that need refrigeration, consider investing in a TSA-approved cold case that keeps them cool for hours. And good news for those who use a CPAP machine—you can bring it onboard, and it doesn’t count toward your carry-on limit.

If you’re bringing liquids or gels in your carry-on, remember the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule: liquids must be in containers of 3 ounces or less, all fitting into one quart-sized bag per person. Larger liquids can go in your checked bag; just make sure they’re sealed properly to prevent spills.

How to Pack Within a 50 lbs Limit:

Hitting that 50 lbs limit is easier than you might think, especially for longer trips. To pack efficiently, mix and match outfits. Pair a few pants with different tops and light sweaters. Lightweight dresses that you can accessorize differently are also a great idea. Choose versatile shoes—a good pair of walking shoes, sneakers, sandals, and maybe one or two pairs of dress shoes if needed. By planning your wardrobe carefully, you’ll save space and weight, leaving room for other essentials like hair dryers and those liquids you couldn’t carry on. Packing an extra empty bag is handy for any souvenirs you pick up along the way.

Important Documents:

When traveling abroad, it’s wise to make several copies of important documents like your passport. Leave one copy at home with someone you trust and keep another copy with you. Consider using a money belt to securely carry your money and credit cards. These belts are comfortable, discreet, and add an extra layer of security.

Note to Cruise Passengers:

If you’re going on a cruise, keep in mind that while there’s usually no strict limit on luggage size or weight, cruise lines prohibit certain items. Irons, including flat irons for hair and garment irons, as well as steamers, are not allowed on board. If they’re found, they’ll be held until the end of your trip.

I hope these tips give you some helpful insights. Now all that’s left is to get packing and enjoy your journey!
